As a veterinary medicine student, I've seen the same scene play out countless times: a spay, neuter, or wound-repair surgery goes perfectly — and then the recovery goes sideways because the pet won't stop licking the incision, or is so stressed by the cone that they won't eat or sleep. The surgery is only half the job. How a pet recovers at home determines whether that incision heals cleanly or turns into a costly complication.
Why licking is the real danger
A pet's instinct after surgery is to lick the wound. It feels soothing to them — but a pet's mouth carries bacteria, and a rough tongue reopens delicate stitches. Licking is the leading cause of post-operative complications: infections, opened incisions, and seromas. Most surgeries that "go wrong" at home go wrong for this one reason.
This is why your vet sends every patient home with something to stop licking. The question is which option causes the least harm in the process.
The problem with the cone of shame
The traditional Elizabethan collar (the cone) works by physically blocking the mouth from reaching the wound. It does the job — but at a real cost to your pet's wellbeing:
- Stress and anxiety — the cone disorients pets, muffles their hearing, and narrows their vision
- Trouble eating and drinking — many pets struggle to reach their bowl
- Disrupted sleep — the rigid plastic makes it hard to rest comfortably
- Bumping and getting stuck — on furniture, walls, and doorways
- It doesn't cover the body — for side, back, or belly incisions, a cone barely helps
Stress slows healing. A pet that can't rest, eat, or move comfortably recovers more slowly — the opposite of what we want.

Measure your pet's chest, neck, and back length and match them to the size chart — a suit that's too tight restricts healing, too loose lets them reach the wound. Choose breathable, skin-friendly cotton. And make sure the suit covers the specific area your pet's surgery was in.
